Si! Ya está en YouTube mi video con mi canción del lionfish. Disfraz, canción, ritmo, edición, todo creación original de Areos Aquas y filmación de El Gordo Sharmuto.

Ojalá disfruten de estos primeros pininos de lo que Areos Aquas pretende a futuro: unir el arte con la ciencia. Para los que no hablan inglés, la canción cuenta mucho de lo que encontré al estudiar al pez león, que es un pez muy versátil que se adapta a cualquier ambiente y circunstancia, razón por la cual es tan buen invasor.
Excelente cazador que consume presas tan variadas como los juveniles de peces loros, pargos, meros y camarones, el pez león se ha convertido en una de las invasiones más nombradas en la historia de los arrecifes coralinos. Y fue sin intención! Derivada de nuestro afán por transportar pecesitos de lindos colores para ver en los acuarios en donde no pertenecen. Así que antes de comprar mascota exótica, piensa! Tu también puedes contribuir a un medio ambiente más local y sano.

         Turns out that while I was busy studying fish that prey on other fish and crustaceans,  I was missing all this cool information on scientists finding out that there are more fishes that eat coral. And what is way cooler is that many of these fishes are parrotfishes, which I always learned (and taught all my coral reef monitoring volunteers!) were the saviors of corals because they ate seaweeds that could smother corals and impede their growth.
          Turns out, some parrotfish species are actually detrimental to corals, feeding even on their reproductive parts and causing serious colony damage. Old news? Let´s say the evidence keeps accumulating and the subject has recently shined, but I have found records as late as the 80s. Coral reefs never cease to amaze me! I applaud the curiosity of my colleagues who are always finding new and really interesting information.

Sharing some fishy sites

From today´s web searches trying to make sense of this wide expanding knowledge base that I am acquiring and aiming to merge into one single proposal!

Check them out, one engages the public in reef life surveys (http://reeflifesurvey.com/) and the other is the bible for Eastern Pacific Tropical Fish (http://biogeodb.stri.si.edu/sftep/), which I am aiming to study for my doctoral research at The University of Western Australia. The bible is also recently available as an app, for all you tech-minded ones (by Dr. Ross Roberston and Mr. Ernesto Peña, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Panama).

Porque no todo tiene que ser efímero si hay una forma de perpetuarlo; para eso sirve la red, o ¿no?

So what is AREOS AQUAS anyway?

It all started with my fascination with the pseudonim concept.
All the cool authors used to have one. It was like an alter ego, a separate personality that would come out and speak out; freely. It was a secret, a way to reinvent oneself and a way to find a name that would encompass all I wanted to sign for, each time I wrote a poem.

So there it was, from the latin air and water, Areos Aquas came to be, and it appears in my notebooks since I was about 17, in different colors, styles, shapes, always, under the pieces of writing I admire the most and that are like whispered to me from beyond.

And then Areos Aquas turned into a logo and an idea (and just a couple of months ago my first poetry book!), and it is a proyect for years to come. My signature to the world that wishes to mix my love for the ocean, my science, my love for the arts, for the ethereal, for all that can´t be measured but just felt.

The first scientific publication to come out of the interoceanic lionfish team (University of Guam, Oregon State University). So, lionfish are basically rare where they belong. Mmmhhh.... What makes them so abundant and efficient in the Atlantic where they are introduced? More to come.

Chequeen uno de los videos precursores del lanzamiento de mi champeta del pez león. Una tarde de filamción en Puerto Colombia antes de la Batalla de Flores, del Carnaval de Barranquilla.
Y como no he comentado en mi blog acerca de esto, he estudiado al pez león por 2 años en el Indo-Pacífico en donde la especie es nativa. Acá en el Caribe Colombiano ya se encuentra en todas partes en densidades bastante altas. Que vivan los Tagangeros que le están dando matimba!!

Visiones Carnestoléndicas

Ok, hace tanto que no escribo una nueva entrada en mi blog que parece inútil esto de tener un blog, pero no me rindo!
Esa fobia mia hacia la comunicación cibernética se está curando de a poquitos,
porque todos los días veo los milagros que hace la comunicación cibernética.
Gracias a ella encuentro muchas cosas interesantes, conozco historias que me inspiran
y me comunico con personas al otro lado del mundo. Además hay más de un blog que hasta ha hecho milagros!

Bueno, esta entrada es para compartir mis visiones de un carnaval en Santo Tomás.
Luego de 10 años de perderme cada uno de los carnavales de mi tierra Barranquilla,
esta ciudadana del mundo se fue al ruedo a tomar fotos y esto es lo que resulta: mi compartir carnestoléndico. Un poquito de cumbia, otro de populacho y otro de maizena. Las sonrisas lo dicen todo, estas son de verdad épocas de fiesta donde poco importa más que un buen tambor, una bailaita y un trago de ron.
